ROXAS City – The Department of Transportation and Communications (DOTC) is studying the possibility of opening a direct roll on, roll-off (ro-ro) shipping route from the province of Batangas to this city's Culasi port, and vice versa.
There are many products in Capiz being shipped to Manila and other parts of the country, DOTC Secretary Mar Roxas II explained to the media here.
Roxas was in Capiz on Thursday. He attended the blessing and inauguration of the new Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) building on Arnaldo Boulevard.
The former senator also said the airport in Roxas City is one of the 21 well-equipped airports in the country in terms of navigational equipment.
It also has one of the longest runways, Roxas stressed.
Still, there is a plan to upgrade the Roxas airport to international standards, he revealed.
The country has some 86 airports but only 45 of them receive flights.
The Philippines also has some 2,000 seaports but only 200 of them are operating.
Meanwhile, Roxas reiterated that the revival of Panay Railways is no longer viable.
"Let us use the people's money properly," he stressed.
Reviving the railways is not economically wise, Roxas said.
"What are the products of Iloilo that Capiz doesn't have? There is no complimentary products between the two provinces," he stressed.
